Print: The printing method used to create this fabric design is the historic woodcut method, where wooden pieces are layered with colored ink and transferred onto the fabric with a pressing motion. This technique has been handed down from generation to generation along with the secret recipe for the “Ruggine”, or “rust” ink color, which includes red wine vinegar, wheat flour, and rust from cast iron.
Printing Method: The wooden stamps are made from
pear tree and walnut tree wood, and are hammered down with a mallet to properly affix the design onto the fabric. Once dried, the piece of fabric is submerged
in a fixing liquid made with ashes from the abovementioned wood and boiling water.
Design: The vine shoot design is a classic from the 1800s and a favorite among bottega-owners from yesteryear. This fabric features a harmonious rustic design with sinuous vine shoots.
Territory & History: Even if this printing technique is known to most as being originally from Romagna, it shares an inextricable link with the towns of Sansepolcro and Carpegna, respectively in the provinces of Arezzo and Pesaro. It is a technique that has been handed down for 7 generations by artisan printmakers who first arrived here at the request of the Prince of Carpegna at the start of the 1800s. Badivecchio in Valmarecchia was located near the border of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany but has since disappeared from maps after the end of the reign of the House of Lorraine. However, artisanal printmaking and art still showcase its existence today. The Valmarecchia line by Terrae Altrove is a nod to history.
Washing Instructions: Machine wash 30 / 40° C. Use bleach if necessary, no stain removers. Iron inside-out.
