Technique : after the shaping of the clay, it is cooked (in the oven) at high temperature, about 1000 degrees centigrade, the terracotta “cookie” obtained is then immersed in an enamel bath and once dried it is ready to be decorated.
The decoration is still made today with the ancient method of dusting which consists in transferring charcoal powder to the glazed object through many small holes made on a sheet of tissue paper set on it. These traces of “dusted” charcoal will be the lines that will follow the brush to complete the decoration and that will produce unique and non-repeatable objects.
Once the object is fully decorated, we move on to the “spray” phase of a vitrifying substance that melts during the second cooking makes vitrification and makes the colors bright
Design: The Gryphon (of the Metauro) is an ancient mythological figure that symbolizes perfection and power, half Eagle and half Lion. Represented in the art since the ancient Egyptians has found over the centuries various declinations. We find it present in many heraldic coats of arms, artifacts and artistic decorations.
Territory & History : The art of majolica has been very important in Italy and Deruta has been one of the most relevant and famous town of this art since the Middle Ages. Between 1400 and 1500 there was no European court that did not have majolica of Deruta. In this period we also define the characteristic decorative types such as grotesques and arabesques. Motifs ,still used today, strongly distinctive of the derutese majolica. The sisters Ivana and Lorella produce in their artisan workshop respecting tradition, with passion and love and, with great skill, these unique objects for terræaltrove.
Badivecchio in Valmarecchia was located near the border of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (Il Ranco) but since the end of the reign of the House of Lorraine it has disappeared from the maps. However, his name remains a reference for high-quality artisans of terrae altrove
