There was a time in Italian history, before the World Wars, that you could not import coffee on account of sanctions that were in place.
As told story goes, « There once was a king of coffee, under whom we could drink even three, but when became emperor, coffee we’d no longer savour. »
Without coffee, Italians were forced to find alternatives and so « acorn » coffee was born. It is made by peeling and drying acorns. They are then toasted similarly to barley and ground to a fine powder to which you add boiling water.
Once the water boils, remove from heat and allow it to rest, the powder settling to the bottom of the recipient. Pour.
It is similar in colour to coffee but not in caffeine content. However, acorn coffee is rich in health benefits and tastes great with a dash of clover honey.
